Bariatric Support Group

Our support group is held on the first Wednesday of every month (except January) in the Foyer of The Mayo Building at Salford Royal Hospital from 6.30pm until about 8.30pm.

We advise all patients who are considering surgery to attend at least two patient support groups. The team at Salford Royal can inform, educate and advise you about surgery, but the people at the support group can tell you what life actually is like after surgery.  There is a mix of people who attend these groups including:

  • New patients awaiting surgery
  • People who are in the early days after surgery
  • People who are a few years down the line from surgery
  • Family and friends of all of the above
  • Various members of the bariatric team

You do not need to register or let us know you are coming along, just turn up with your close family or friends who will support you through your weight loss journey.

Each month we try and arrange a different speaker to come and give a talk on topics relevant to surgery. This could be a health professional talking about the operations, diet or medications. It could also be a patient sharing their experience or an interesting form of exercise class (we have done belly dancing, boot camp and Tai Chi in the past). The talk or activity lasts for 30-60 minutes and you are then given the opportunity to ask questions and to mingle and speak with others who have had the surgery.
