Neurosurgical Spinal Services

The Neurosurgical Spinal Services in Manchester is one of the largest in the country serving a population of approximately 3.5 million adults.  We undertake about 1350 spinal cases a year (in excess of 1200 elective and 150 emergencies).

The 4 Consultant Neurosurgeons with a sub-specialist interest in complex spinal surgery are Messers Jeremy Holland, Kanna Gnanalingham, John Leach and Ahmed Abou-Zeid. We deal with a variety of spinal conditions including spinal trauma, tumour and degenerative disease. Areas of specialist interest include minimally invasive spinal approaches, cranio-cervical junction pathology and motion preserving technology.

The surgeons within the unit undertake both basic science and clinical research in spinal disorders and there are collaborations with scientists at the University of Manchester. There are ongoing clinical trials and we also offer a Spinal fellowship for surgeons in training. SRFT is a Visitation centre for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery, with regular visits from surgeons wishing to learn such ‘key hole’ surgical techniques.
