Awake Craniotomy

Neuropsychology provides comprehensive assessment for patients being considered for awake craniotomy including assessing suitability for awake neurosurgical procedures, pre-operative fMRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), baseline cognitive assessment, preparation of patients for awake neurosurgery and functional assessment in theatre as part of the intra-operative functional mapping assessment.

All patients undergoing awake craniotomy for treatment of primary brain tumour are referred by their treating neurosurgeon for neuropsychological assessment following discussion at the brain tumour multi-disciplinary team meeting and will routinely undergo clinical assessment, baseline cognitive assessment and pre-operative functional MRI; to inform the clinical team and the patient of potential risks and benefits associated with undergoing this neurosurgical treatment. Patients are also routinely reviewed post operatively in order to monitor and provide support with their recovery.

Neuropsychology will accept referrals from neurosurgery for any patient being considered for awake craniotomy. Please address referrals to Dr Jacki Bambrough, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, Department of Neuropsychology.
