Brain Tumour

The brain tumour service accepts patients with any type of primary brain or CNS brain tumours, including pituitary tumours.

The clinical neuropsychologist works as a core member of brain tumour multi-disciplinary team and works closely with treating clinicians, clinical nurse specialists and other clinical specialists in providing assessment and psychological intervention.

Reasons for being referred to the department include:

  • Neuropsychological assessment prior to planned surgery. The purpose of this may be to establish the level of cognitive function prior to surgery and help with planning the surgery. Assessment may also include assessing suitability for awake craniotomy, preparation and assessment during awake craniotomy with functional mapping and pre-operative functional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).
  • Neuropsychological assessment following neurosurgery and/or radiotherapy/chemotherapy. For example, if a person experiences ongoing problems with thinking skills such as memory, concentration and reasoning, and if these problems are interfering with a person’s activities of daily living or return to work.
  • Psychological assessment and treatment. Where there have been changes in emotional wellbeing (depression, anxiety), personal relationships and/or behaviour following diagnosis and/or treatment of brain tumour.

Referrals may be made to our general neuropsychology on call service whilst patients are in-patients to support with questions regarding an individuals’ mental capacity and/or provide assessment and support relating to cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes resulting from a person’s tumour diagnosis.

Please address referrals to Dr Jacki Bambrough, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, Department of Neuropsychology.
