Hyperacute treatment of Stroke

On arrival in the Comprehensive Stroke Centre (CSC), the patient is immediately seen by a member of the Stroke Team, usually in the Accident and Emergency Department.

If the clinical diagnosis of stroke is confirmed the patient medically stabilised if necessary, and urgent brain imaging organised. If clinically appropriate, thrombolysis “clot busting” treatment is used.

Admission to the acute stroke unit is organised as quickly as possible. Some patients may need more detailed scanning, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or contrast scans.

The stroke team works closely with colleagues in neuroradiology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology to ensure that people get the treatment that they need at the right time.
