Double win at Spirit of Salford Awards

Congratulations to Salford Royal's Nick Lees and the Irlam and Cadishead Volunteer Driving Scheme for scooping awards at this year's Spirit of Salford Awards.

Nick Lees was crowned Public Servant of the Year and the volunteer driving scheme won the Community Group of the Year award.

Mr Lees, a Consultant in colorectal cancer, said he was humbled to have been named winner.

He added: “It was a fantastic night, hearing about the immense effort so many people are putting in to so many community projects around Salford.

“I was delighted - and a bit taken aback - to win this award. A huge team of people at Salford Royal looked after a terribly sick patient with bowel perforation and septic shock. His family were also dealing with their mum's very serious illness at the same time, so it is deeply humbling that they went to the trouble of making this nomination.

“I was equally delighted to see an old patient of mine given an award for the commitment he has put in to volunteering in the community in recent years.”

The Irlam and Cadishead Volunteer Driver scheme was set up in 2012 to help local people get to hospital appointments and reduce the cost of travel. Drivers volunteer between two to six hours a week using their own vehicles and build relationships with patients giving them emotional support in difficult times.

The Spirit of Salford Community Awards celebrate the great and diverse work that goes on in the city’s communities and neighbourhoods.
